Although Derby, UK did not become a city until 1977, the area was first settled by Romans nearly 2000 years ago.
Many notable historical figures have called Derby home including authors Charlotte Bronte and Jane Austen; Erasmus Darwin (biologist, physician, and grandfather of Origin of the Species author Charles Darwin); and Florence Nightingale.
Derby is home to St. Paul's Church (which was built in 1848), the Derby Museum and Art Gallery, Markeaton Park, and the allegedly haunted Derby Gaol.
Derby was the setting for the beginning of Britain's Industrial Revolution. Some of its earliest factories and spinning mills were located there, such as Longdon's Mill (built 1803). Old pubs such as the Golden Eagle Pub (built 1853) are still standing.
